Jazz festivals in the summer

This summer, going on a trip, be sure to check out one of European jazz festivals in Rotterdam, on the French Riviera in Vienna, or perhaps in the suburbs of Lyon, where you will enjoy music in the Roman amphitheatre. Famous jazz festival in Montreux, Switzerland, will be held at 46 times: this year you will hear Jane Birkin and Bob Dylan.

Jazz has long enjoyed in the Old World no less popular than in their native States, and sometimes more – many famous American musicians permanently settled in Europe. So, one of the oldest Jazz festivals À Juan in the resort town of Juan-Les-Pins on the French Riviera, for the first time on 7 July 1960, the year after the death of the new Orleans clarinetist and saxophonist Sidney Bechet . who spent the last dozen years of his life, determined to remain in France after the unexpectedly successful performance in Paris.

This year the festival will be held for 10 days – from 12 to 22 July and will cover a variety of musical styles. With one hand in the program claimed such renowned jazz musicians as “the last of the Mohicans”, the colossus of the tenor saxophone Sonny Rollins . the trio enthusiastically babbling and meowing at the piano Keith Jarrett ( Gary peacock on bass and Jack DeJohnette drums), vocalist Bobby McFerrin (with fusion/smooth jazz Quartet Yellowjackets ).

Along with them in this unique place, where the Mediterranean sea meets the Maritime Alps, and are more known outside of jazz artists, for example, known from hit Sex Bomb singer Tom Jones . soul group Kool & The Gang . and two daughters of Ravi Shankar (though in separate concerts): playing Indian sitar Anouska Shankar and multiple winner of the Grammy award-winning singer Norah Jones .

Younger, but incredibly intense festival Jazz À Vienne in Vienne . the suburbs of Lyon, is held in the Roman amphitheatre two weeks – from June 28 to July 13. The organizers tried to organize his many headlining thematically: one day this piano, in another – guitar, then the bass (Israeli Avishai Cohen and the star of last year’s ceremony Grammy Esperanza Spalding . uminova award Justin Bieber); African music (genius banjo Bela Fleck with singers from Mali), gospel, funk and Blues.

Also appearing are: Afro-Cuban ensemble beloved by Muscovites Cameroonian bass player Richard Bona Mandekan Cubano . vocal-piano Duo of Bobby McFerrin and chick Corea . hip hop/jazz experiments of Robert Glasper . Unity Band guitarist Pat Metini . Armenian pianist Tigran Hamasyan . Mosaic Project drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and awards in bluesmen Dr. house-Hugh Laurie . which two concerts in June and waiting for Moscow.

Consonant with the French Vienna, the Austrian capital Vienna for ten years has successfully proved to the world that not a single waltz city alive. For two weeks (June 25-July 9) Vienna will provide the festival Jazz Fest Wien their best sites.

The club Porgy & Bess will give two concerts a stellar Quartet: bassist Richard bona and guitarist Mike stern (with drummer Dave Wacom ), and one – a delightfully husky canadian vocalist Therese Montcalm and rising star jazz trumpet Ambrose Akinmusire .

Boiler room Spittelau (current incineration plant, the facade of which the famous architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser transformed in its original “environmentally friendly” style) will be open-air Playground, for example for the German pop-soul trumpeter til Brenner .

Hollowbody Band two fusion guitarists – John Scofield, Kurt Rosenwinkel . and the Cuban project Los Cubanos Postizos their avant-garde colleagues Marc RIBO . Old Viennese Opera 1869 accept vocalist Bobby McFerrin (solo and with guests), Quartet no less than the great pianist Herbie Hancock . Blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa and others, and the highlight of the program, no doubt – all the same trio of Keith Jarrett .

From all European festivals with the word “jazz” in the title of the largest, though least jazz in the strict sense – Swiss Montreux on lake Geneva, known among other things by a fire in the same casino during the concert of Frank Zappa, which is dedicated to the most famous hit of Deep Purple – “Smoke on the Water”. The logo of the 20th anniversary of the festival in 1986 he established himself Andy Warhol, which also says a lot about the popularity and importance of this event.

In two halls, bearing the names of Igor Stravinsky and miles Davis, from June 29 to July 14 will be such the recognized stars of different genres like Bob Dylan . Jane Birkin . Alanis Morissette . Katie Melua . flutist of Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson . flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia . the pioneer of the British trip-hop Tricky and Finnish symphonic metallers Nigthwish .

All this motley kaleidoscope coexists with the previously mentioned by McFerrin and Corea, Hancock, Metini, popular smooth-jazz Quartet Fourplay, or perhaps band Spectrum Road under the leadership of drummer Cindy Blackman-Santana (wife of Carlos Santana) with organist John Medeski . guitarist Vernon Reid and bassist Jack Bruce . Parallel to the main program to Chillon castle, a series of piano recitals will give the German record label ACT, specializing in the intersection of modern jazz and classical traditions. Pole Leszek Mozdzer will present its vision of the national music history from Frederic Chopin to-talk, Free German Michael – a similar review from Schubert to electronics of Kraftwerk, and living in France Israeli Yaron Herman will take the “carte Blanche” works of Debussy.

Equally famous Dutch festival called “jazz at the North Sea” ( North Sea Jazz in Rotterdam is not as extended in time (this year from July 6 to 8), but takes place simultaneously on a dozen sites, named after various rivers of the world: the Amazon, the Mississippi, Hudson, Nile, Tigris, Congo and even the Volga river with the Yenisei.

Every year one of the artists settled in the city for the duration of the festival and it becomes “honor resident”. Current Artist in Residence, the irrepressible saxophonist Joshua Redman, three days brought in four new faces: exclusive big band project to the memory of Stan Getz with the Dutch orchestra “metropolis” under the direction of Vince Mendoza . formed only a year ago, the Quartet James Farm with pianist Aaron Parks . joint performance with the trio The Bad Plus and unique saxophone Quartet (festival in Tsaritsyno – just its premiere).

In addition to countless concerts, the program opened the conference with musicians (saxophonist Ravi Coltrane . pianist Tigran Hamasyan . trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire . guitarist Jim Hall ), master classes (vocalist Gretchen Parlato . bassist Darryl Jones and drummer Omar Hakim ), and “blind test” from Downbeat magazine – saxophonist James Carter will be proposed at the hearing to call the perpetrators of several compositions.

Jazz festivals both in sultry Italy and in the Nordic countries, both in the Eastern capital of Europe – Istanbul and Western extremities: this year the first international festival Gibjazzfest (28-30 June) will be held in Gibraltar – “overseas” of the British province in the Pyrenees. In the UK this year marks the diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth.

So, at the jazz festival in Marlboro (13-15 July) will be presented forgotten orchestral Suite by Duke Ellington, The Queen’s Suite, created under the impression from the meeting with Her Majesty in 1958 – the only vinyl recording of opus Maitre swing sent Elizabeth and never played it until his death.
